Instrumentation

Four options are provided:

  1. Soprano recorder, alto recorder, piano (trio)
  2. Two soprano recorders and piano (trio)
  3. Soprano recorder and alto recorder (duet)
  4. Two soprano recorders (duet)

Scores are provided for each of the above four alternatives. But the music files (MIDI and mp3) are just of the first alternative. (Wherever an F alto recorder is used the score is transposed form -- as if in C).

Composition date

This short 19-measure piece was composed for my then 7-year-old grandson, Pierre, in 1999 at which time he was playing recorder (and my daughter could accompany him on the piano). Three years later, in 2002, at which time 10-year-old Pierre was studying classical guitar, I recast the piece as a guitar solo.

Computer performers (when human ones are absent)

Like all the MIDI files here, it is in General MIDI form. The General MIDI patches (on the 0-127 numbering system) are:
PartGeneral MIDI patch
name#
PianoAcoustic Grand Piano0
Soprano RecorderRecorder74
Alto RecorderRecorder74
How they sound will depend on your own playback software.

On my own synth I used the following patches:

PianoRoland RD500Gr Piano A10
Soprano RecorderRoland JV880Recorder on the Orchestral Expansion Board (OEB)91
Alto RecorderRoland JV880Recorder on the OEB91
These are what you hear on the mp3 files.

How the MIDI file sounds depends, of course, on your playback mechanism. On my computer, MIDI files are played by the QuickTime PlugIn. This one doesn't come out too badly although the piano is perhaps a little soft in relation to the recorders (I should fix). The mp3 files are mellower. Of course, if you have a synthesizer, you can download the MIDI file and set the instruments to your own preferred patches -- but that's more work than downloading the mp3 file.

Short excerpt:
...... Intro and first half 0:34 0.3 MB
This is such a tiny piece that even this small excerpt is a whole half of it. The piano is mellower and in better balance with the recorders.

** If you have a high-speed connection, forget about the MIDI files and just use the MP3 files (better). If you have a dial-up connection, consider the faster (but not as good) MIDI file only if the MP3 files seem to be taking too long to play or download.
